Meet MALARKEY, Newcastle’s Y2K Vintage Gem
by Jessica Prothero
MALARKEY is a vintage independent fashion boutique founded by twin sisters Anya and Elise Miller from Northumberland. Their vision was to venture into the world of vintage fashion and bring Y2K (nineties/noughties) style back to the streets of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Set up as a destination for a curated collection of Y2K pieces, MALARKEY offers a distinctly throwback shopping experience: “There is no one as specifically tailored to 90s/00s curating, to as high a standard as ours, in the heart of our city.”
Compared with other cities across the UK, the twins found Newcastle’s vintage scene relatively limited and saw an opportunity to create a cool alternative to fast fashion.
“We promote quality and unique pieces which have stood the test of time and should live forever.”
MALARKEY’s pieces are curated from around the world, drawing on Parisian, Italian and American vintage styles.
Sustainability is also central to the brand’s approach. “We handpick every piece that would have been stock destined for landfill had it not been salvaged by us,” the twins explain, giving garments a new lease of life through recycling and repurposing.
The pair’s eye for distinctive labels and styling comes from their backgrounds in textiles and fashion marketing, which they studied at university. They continue to keep an eye on current trends, incorporating details such as lace trims, mesh and sequins into their collections. When it comes to dressing for a particular occasion, the twins have plenty of ideas.
“Morgan de Toi is a must for a girls’ night in town, or Cache Cache for a grungy night out in the Ouseburn — it’s versatile and great for dressing up or down.”
For a classic date night, archival labels such as the oh-so-chic Jacqueline Riu offer another option, while their selection of vintage pieces makes it easy to experiment with different styles without relying on the latest high-street trends.
Starting out with clothing, MALARKEY has since expanded into accessories, including bags, belts and jewellery. Their recently sourced GGL (George, Gina & Lucy) tech bags proved particularly popular, while their collection also includes statement belts and geometric jewellery.
Alongside their Y2K accessories, they stock deadstock and beautifully crafted handmade Italian jewellery. “Our jewellery makes the perfect birthday treat, stocking filler, or gift for your gal pal,” they confess. Their newest collection of hair jewellery takes the Y2K influence even further.
“Think big, bold, swirly and silver to style your up-do,” adding a playful finishing touch to an outfit.
Before opening their permanent shop, MALARKEY launched at local North East markets, including Ouseburn and Tynemouth. These early events helped them gauge the local appetite for vintage fashion and build a community around the brand. The business continued to grow, culminating in the opening of their permanent shop in October 2025.
With a focus on finding pieces that feel individual, the twins are proud of the collection they have built and shared, “Vintage sourcing can be very hit or miss, but the feedback we’ve received suggests every piece in our shop is a hit!”
Established in 2025, MALARKEY has already received local recognition, winning Newcastle’s People’s Choice Award for Favourite Sustainable Business.
“It’s great to receive local recognition for our sustainable sourcing practices, because that’s at the heart of MALARKEY.”
You’ll find MALARKEY in the heart of Ouseburn, a neighbourhood known for its independent businesses, creative community and thriving arts scene. It feels like a fitting home for a boutique built around individuality, sustainability and a love of vintage fashion.
The twins also love seeing how customers style their MALARKEY finds, regularly sharing outfits and inspiration on Instagram at @malarkey.vintage.
If you’re exploring Ouseburn and looking for something a little different, MALARKEY is well worth a browse.
